Using Insurance Benefits to Pay for Massage
Many of our clients have had their massage companies pay for their massage events or programs—and many have also been denied. We don’t have any sort of magic formula to tell you whether or not your insurance company will be willing to cover massage. It really just depends on what kind of insurance you have, your insurance company, and the kinds of wellness credits they offer.
Why Would Insurance Cover Massage at Work?
First, let’s go over why insurance companies would cover massage.
There are tons of benefits to massage! Massage therapy is both a great way to prevent future injury and soothe the aches and pains of any current injury. Chair massage relieves the pains of carpal tunnel, injuries caused by common desk ergonomic problems, and other common physical ailments for office workers.
Massage also offers great mental health benefits! It’s stress-relieving and and helps employees relax. Not to mention, receiving a massage at work makes employees happier to be there and will boost office morale.
All of these are great reasons for insurance companies to cover your massage costs.
How We Have Seen Insurance Cover Massage
We’ve worked with a lot of clients who have had this go both ways—some get denied by their insurance company and others have found success.
- Massage is completely paid for: Some massage companies will take care of 100% of the bill!
- Massage is partially paid for: The insurance company has paid for at least part of the massages. They may have some sort of limit to the wellness benefits that they offer, but they’re willing to cover up to that amount. This also applies if they have a quarterly budget for your wellness program, but you’d like to offer massage monthly.
How to Get Your Insurance to Pay for Massage at the Office
The process isn’t complicated. Let’s go over it now:
1. Get pre-approval. Before you assume your insurance will cover massages, give them a call. They can tell you what they’ll cover and what kinds of documentation you may need.
2. Pay the bill. When it comes down to paying the bill, here’s what you need to know. You’ll be responsible to seek payment from your insurance. Incorporate Massage doesn’t have any insurance billing company in order to keep your costs down. Billing your massage company is completely up to you, but it’s not typically difficult. You can typically do this one of two ways:
- Submit the invoice to your insurance and ask them to pay Incorporate Massage directly.
- Pay the invoice and then seek reimbursement from your insurance company.
Typically, it’s easier for clients to have their insurance pay for the massages, but the timeline may require that you pay the invoice and get reimbursed.
Using Individual Insurance to Pay for Massage
Occasionally, we have clients who receive massage through our corporate massage programs and are required to pay a small subsidy for their individual massage. They may be wondering if they can use our massage therapy services to fulfill a doctor’s prescription for massage. Massage prescriptions are pretty common if you’re receiving treatment because of worker’s compensation or you were involved in a car accident.
The answer is here is essentially the same—you’ll need to contact your insurance company and if they will pay for it, you’ll have to pay the subsidy and bill your insurance for reimbursement.
